ANOTHER Paarlite has become victim to ATM fraud.
And this time the money which was unlawfully drawn from his account, was withdrawn in Europe.
The incident occurred last Wednesday at a Standard Bank ATM in Lady Grey Street, Paarl.
Here a woman was using the ATM to withdraw money when a man appeared behind her and offered to help her.
She told the man that she did not need any help and asked him to leave her alone.
The man however continued to crowd the woman, eventually grabbing her hand and pretended to insert her card into the machine and appeared to leave.
Thinking that it was safe to punch in her pin code, she did so. But the swindler was still standing behind her with her card and after observing her pin code, he fled the scene.
Later it was discovered that R10 000 had been withdrawn from the victim’s bank account and paid out in Euro in a foreign country. Both the police and Standard Bank are investigating the incident.
A bank spokesperson said that whenever a client feels unsafe or intimidated at an ATM, they must immediately press the cancel key on the machine, remove their card and leave.
